The Recycling Bird Houses the Worm...
|
|
Ever considered a worm farm? For those readers already squirming in their boots, why not consider this ecofriendly tool when commencing on your household recycling initiative.
What is a worm-farm and how does it work?
A worm farm is a great way of turning organic waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser for soil and plants. The worms eat organic waste and turn it into liquid fertiliser and worm castings (material that has been digested by worms). Both of these elements are excellent nutrition for your pot-plants and garden.
Open Sky offers a quick way of starting your own worm-farm. This "starter kit" provides everything you need including:
- A four tray worm box
- A step-by-step instruction manual
- A small bag of start-up lime and 150g worms to get you started
Worm-farms are considered the new-age eco-friendly pet (and yes we might admit that they would cost less in vet fees, we do not really see kids naming and petting them on a daily basis). They do however contribute to the elimination of food and other organic waste.
So why not invest in a new garden add-on and treat your family to a new form of recycling this winter? Enquire today

5 Ways to Recycle Old Books and Magazines
|
| |
Sitting with a stash of Books or Magazines that keeps on piling up on your bedside table? Open Sky provides some useful tips to passing on these valuables?
With winter fast approaching, you or a family member might be snuggling up with a new book in the evenings. But what happens when you have read that new page-turner from cover to cover and your kids are not so keen on reading an old Mills & Boon? Open Sky Recycling provides some great tips to “recycling” old books and magazines.
- Donate your books to a school or local library: As long as the book is in a good condition (i.e no pages missing or torn) why not consider passing it on to local school or library (probably not a good idea to pass on the Mills & Boon to a school).
- Contribute to a charitable organisation: Many charities and non-profit organizations have thrift stores that sell second hand books to raise funds. Why not search for an organisation in your area and enquire as to possibilities of dropping off your books.
- Make it a social occasion: Why not start a book-club? Invite friends and family (and maybe even a neighbor) around for a cup of coffee and ask each member to bring a book that they have read and would like to swop out. This way you will never be short of reading material and have an excuse to socialize mid-week.
- Give the doctors’ room a face-lift: Ever got stuck in a waiting room with a copy of You Magazine from the 1980’s? Why not drop magazines off once a month once the family have read them cover to cover.
- Consider Arts & Crafts: Do you have little ones that want to play outside in the freezing cold? Why not encourage them to page through old magazines and cut out pictures for “cut and paste projects”? (Remember to supervise the little ones).
This way you can extend the life of a book and maybe even cut down on some waste. Remember that most popular magazines are now also available for download on mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones. Also check out Open Sky's waste guide to see what you can recycle.
