Festive Season 2010
Welcome to all our new partners we are very excited about your support.
2010 has been a very challenging year for many businesses and for Open Sky Recycling has been no different. As we go into the festive season and 2011 it is great to review the year.
The most significant change for Open Sky this year has been increasing awareness about recycling and its benefits. Yet doubts remain. Some critics wondered if, far from being an environmental panacea, recycling was actually a giant placebo that made everyone feel virtuous but wastes both money and resources.
So How Efficient is Recycling ?
Since 2007 Experts in Europe and USA have conducted detailed life-cycle analyses on recycled goods, calculating the energy consumed from the moment they’re picked up by recycling trucks until they are processed into brand-new products.
When compared with the amount of energy required to send the same goods to landfills or incinerators and make new products from scratch. The results are conclusive even after adding in the emissions from collecting the recyclables.
• Aluminium, for example, requires 96 per cent less energy to make from recycled cans than it does to process from bauxite.
• Recycled plastics use 76 per cent less energy.

• Newsprint 45 per cent less energy.

• Recycled glass uses 21 per cent less energy.
The second finding by experts was the success of single-stream recycling. One bin for ALL recyclables resulting in recycling adoption rates leaping by 25%. Open Sky was founded on this principal. This increased efficiency, along with the greater volumes that people recycle, is allowing more types of plastics to be recovered.
